From resort-style pool areas to smart outdoor technology — the outdoor living upgrades Long Island homeowners are investing in this year, based on what we're designing and building across Nassau County, Suffolk County, and the Hamptons.

Long Island homeowners are moving beyond the basic rectangular pool. In 2025, the most requested designs feature tanning ledges, integrated spas, sun shelves, and custom water features that create a resort experience at home. Perimeter overflow (infinity) edges are particularly popular on elevated properties with water views in the Hamptons and North Shore.

The outdoor kitchen has become the centerpiece of Long Island backyard design. Full outdoor kitchens with built-in grills, pizza ovens, refrigerators, and bar seating are now standard in luxury projects. The key trend for 2025 is seamless indoor-outdoor flow — designing the outdoor kitchen to visually connect with the interior kitchen through large sliding or folding glass doors.

Louvered pergolas with motorized adjustable roof panels are the most requested shade structure on Long Island right now. They provide full sun when open and complete rain protection when closed, extending the usable season from April through November. Integrated LED lighting, heating strips, and retractable screens make them true four-season outdoor rooms.

Fire pits and fire tables have become standard in Long Island outdoor living designs. The trend has shifted from freestanding portable units to custom built-in gas fire features integrated into seating walls, pool surrounds, and outdoor living structures. Linear fire bowls and fire-and-water combinations (fire features adjacent to or within pool designs) are particularly popular in contemporary designs.

Bluestone has long been the standard for Long Island patios, but large-format porcelain pavers (24×48 and larger) have become increasingly popular for their low maintenance, frost resistance, and wide range of finishes. Rectified porcelain in marble, travertine, and concrete looks offers the aesthetic of natural stone without the sealing and staining concerns.

Automation is transforming Long Island outdoor spaces. Smart pool systems allow homeowners to control temperature, lighting, water features, and chemistry from their phones. Outdoor audio systems with weatherproof speakers, landscape lighting on smart controls, and automated irrigation systems that adjust based on weather data are all standard requests in 2025 projects.
